Some excellent references for local history and biographical sketches can be found online. At least, it's easier for me to look online and do a search than to dig through a cedar chest full of old, heavy books. Here are 8 useful ones:
My favorite is Rockel's county history from 1908:
Prince's history, 1922:
Beers, 1881:
Centennial history, 1901:
Historical post offices:
1894 Atlas of Clark County:
1875 Atlas:
1870 Atlas:
From the 1870 Atlas of Clarke County. (Yes, it was originally spelled with an "e.") Circle's manufactured and repaired wagons. Wonder if any were marked. Name changed to Lawrenceville about 1875.

From the 1894 Atlas of Clark County. Just noticed the sawmill.

This is the entire contents of the 1916 program for the dedication of the "new" German Township High School. Not only does it have the history and the people behind the first rural high school in Ohio in 1874 but it also has a listing of teachers and students who attended. No records remain from the first 20 years, so many of the early names are from recollections of classmates from that period. A lot of familiar family names.
